Education Programme
The LSQF education projects 2002-4 were designed to encourage participation from both experienced and novice musicians, and we will continue this strategy in 2005. The only qualification participants need is enthusiasm, and a willingness to perform and learn. Schools in London and the UK will be encouraged to send students to the masterclasses held as part of LSQW 05. No charge for participation is generally made to the schools and the emphasis of the project is based on access for all. Schools-based projects in 2004 involved primary schools from Tower Hamlets and in 2005, the focus will be on the same schools, in order to build on the results already achieved. In 2005, schools-based projects will also extend to secondary schools, offering workshops and visits by young professional quartets. The visits might comprise a workshop concert demonstrating the string quartet, its possibilities and varied repertoire through the ages, which will not only link with broader National Curriculum areas, but will act as a real inspiration to young musicians in the school. Another option will be to focus on a specific work (perhaps a set work) which the quartet would workshop and dissect, and then give a final complete performance.
The primary schools visits culminated in LSQW 05 which included a Family Day, workshop sessions and masterclasses, which focussed on the art of the string quartet and string quartet playing. The sessions were open to people of all ages, with a particular focus on young people, and the programme included activities for all musical abilities.
