About The Foundation
A Noble Heritage
Embodying 250 years of music, the string quartet is seen by many as the essence of music. Certainly it is the most intimate medium and has always attracted the best composers. Yehudi Menuhin believed passionately in the art of the string quartet, gave impetus to the idea of a triennial international competition, remaining President until his death in 1999. These efforts evolved into a charitable foundation, the LSQF, which organises the Competition.
What we do
The Foundation helps promote the discovery and development of talent and audiences for the string quartet by holding a series of London based musical and educational events at which both established and younger talented string quartets are showcased. These events culminate in the world's leading international string quartet competition, which takes place every three years in London.
The Foundation also aims to put greater emphasis on the winners' post-Competition development, as well as organise practical workshops for young musicians.
